Sarah J. Price

Sarah J. Price was born in Clintonville in Bourbon County, Kentucky, on March 8, 1906.  She attended schools in Paris, Kentucky, the county seat of Bourbon County.  After high school, she studied at what is now Kentucky State University for two years, then began her teaching career in Bourbon County.  In 1928 she moved to the schools in Harlan, Kentucky.  In her first year there, Mrs. Price taught all eight grades in one school.  In 1930 she left Harlan to teach in Fayette County.

She became a teacher at Newburg School in 1947 and taught until she was named the school’s principal in 1959.  Mrs. Price continued her education at the University of Louisville, receiving her bachelor’s degree in 1951.  She earned a master’s degree from Indiana University in 1953.

Sarah J. Price was the principal at Newburg School for nine years until her death in 1968, the year before Price Elementary School opened.  Price Elementary opened in 1969 in the former county district, also named the Jefferson County Public Schools.  That district decided to honor the late Mrs. Price by naming our then-new school for her.
